In creating a design, I start with the circle of life. I like to make glass you can feel, glass that appeals to all of our senses and tries to make use of refraction and light. I want to paint pictures and tell stories all at the same time. What drives me, is a sort of inner search, in which curiosity, the mysterious and mythology are all important ingredients.Glass, the living solid, is my constant companion. The Poppy dish from Kosta Boda is inspired by a poppy flower right before it blooms. All the colors symbolize different nuances in nature: daylight, rain, frost, and sun. Add some color to your life! Poppy is handmade at Kosta Glassworks, Sweden.
The Poppy is associated with Demeter, the Greek goddess of fertility and the harvest. My inspiration comes from the moment the poppy opens up and spreads its seeds across the countryside.
The colours symbolize the various play of colours in rain, frost, daylight and sunshine. The incredible shape, with its uneven edges and texture, was a bit of a challenge to create in glass. Kjell Engman is from a family of musicians and he also has a background as a professional rock musician, mainly as a guitarist. His musical legacy emerges in his glass art, not only through his familiar glass instruments, but also in the musical, dancing feel and joie de vivre radiated by many of his objects and figures. Engman also works with music in the worlds he creates in his installations, for which he composes soundtracks that are part of the overall experience.
A tirelessly productive visual artist with unbounded imagination and a passion for narrative, who finds free expression through both utility glass and art glass. Kjell Engman gets his inspiration from the most diverse sources, not least from the animal kingdom and the world of music and entertainment.
He often works on large installations in which he also combines elements of sound and light. Kjell Engman is frequently commissioned for public works both in Sweden and abroad.
