Kosta Boda 16 Tall Art Glass Pitcher Can-Can Series, Signed Kjell Engman -1980

Kosta Boda 16 Tall Slender Art Glass Pitcher in the Can-Can Series, Signed Kjell Engman circa 1980, Design #89146. Condition is very light use with no defects whatsoever. Glistens in its strength at about 6 lbs.

This unusual shape in the Can-Can series of decanters, vases, pitchers, cocktail glasses, and urns, is rarely seen for sale. In fact, this design by Engman has not been offered since 2017 and only two times prior to that since 2014. This tall and lovely vase/pitcher would be completely comfortable in Barcelona, Spain, and gives off a vibe not unlike Antonio Carlos Jobim's song Girl from Ipanema. A description accompanying the 2015 sale is highly detailed and quite interesting. I will quote it here.

"Green, blue, orange, yellow and purple 16-1/8"heavyweight glass pitcher / ewer. The dreamy, fluid patterns of these handmade, heirloom-quality glassworks are created by mixing five different colors on a white foundation and letting them melt and dance. Each piece is a unique' one-of-a-kind' work of art. Signed'Kosta Boda, Artist Coll.

Dimensions: 16-1/8"(h) x 5" (w) x 3(d). With characteristic craftsmanship and good design, and an ongoing commitment to avant-garde expression, Kosta Boda has become one of the leading glasshouses in the world. The company's three glassworks in the villages of Kosta, Boda and Åfors each have exciting individual stories of their own, yet stand together under the common brand name Kosta Boda. Eight designers are currently on retainer at Kosta Boda.

They work with both utilitarian and art glass. The designers are Olle Brozén, Anna Ehrner, Kjell Engman, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, Bertil Vallien, Ludvig Lofgren, Asa Jungnelius and Göran Wärff. The artists of Kosta Boda play a decisive role in all the creative stages of the process.

The cooperation between the designers and the skilled crafts people is very close and essential if the designers are to transfer their intentions to the glass. Born in 1946 and retained by Kosta Boda since 1978, Kjell Engman has a studio at Boda glassworks.

Kjell is personally responsible for a fifth of the selection in Kosta Boda's catalogue today and has exhibited over 70 collections and separate exhibits, half of them outside Sweden. In addition, many of his works currently adorn public places within Sweden. He is a tirelessly productive visual artist with unbounded imagination and a passion for narrative, who finds free expression through both utility glass and art glass.

He gets his inspiration from the most diverse sources, including from the animal kingdom and the world of music and entertainment. He often works on large installations in which he also combines elements of sound and light. He is frequently commissioned for public works both in Sweden and abroad.

Kjell explains'I can't express myself particularly well either in speech or writing, so, for me, glass is a way of telling a story. As an aging rock musician, I also think of glass in terms of music. I start out with personal, everyday images and then create music with the glass.
